When troops are on the battlefield, they need to be able to trust the person to the right and left of them to have their back and cover them if things get dangerous. Over the last couple of years, the U.S. Department of Defense has been working with military contractors to develop military battlefield robots that will have the soldiers' back, fighting right alongside the human soldiers.
While your mind might drift to The Terminator right away, take note that the robots that are currently in development for this project are not autonomous and they are basically a rolling rifle with the ability to be remotely controlled and move along rough terrains that are sometimes found in military locations. These robots are designed to save lives on the military battlefield though, not just take them when necessary. When this robotic technology is on the battlefield, it takes the place of human military members, which can mean fewer human casualties.
Along with saving lives, these military battlefield robotic systems are also able to save the DoD some money. Currently, it costs over $2 million dollars to deploy one U.S. soldier overseas for a year in Afghanistan. If the overseas military is cut down by these battlefield robotic replacements, then the U.S. saves a huge amount of money in the process. Soldiers overseas get paid every other week, along with benefits, hazard pay, and other pay bonuses that come along with being in a combat zone. Robots do not have to have those pays, and they stand up well in extremely hot and cold environments.
