Japanese Robot Manufacturers Realize Increase in Sales in 2011

Despite the most devastating disaster in Japan since WWII, industrial robot manufacturers based in Japan saw their sales increase in the first three quarters of 2011.

About one-third of all industrial robot orders originate in Japan, largely due to highly robotic automotive assembly lines. Industrial spot welding robots, such as the Motoman UP165 pictured, are a common sight in automotive factories.

Yaskawa Robotics (the parent company for Motoman Robotics), FANUC Robotics, and Kawasaki’s robot division made up the three industrial robot manufacturers that saw the largest sales increases. Yaskawa’s sales were up 46% from the previous fiscal year. FANUC saw a 6% increase, and Kawasaki also saw significant gains.

Boosting the jump in industrial robot sales were the orders for semiconductors used in smartphones and computers. Robots in these industries typically perform different material handling and assembly tasks. Industrial robots used in automotive lines and vacuum environments to perform welding, painting, and material handling applications also added to the increase in orders and sales in these Japanese based industrial robot manufacturers.

Top Five Reasons To Automate with a FANUC R-2000

Nobody likes to move heavy bags, boxes, or pallets. Manual spot welding with heavy welding guns can be cumbersome also. Manual labor like this typically leads to slow production times, waste, and errors.

There is good news and bad news when it comes to these industrial applications. The bad news is that someone has to do it. The good news is that RobotWorx can integrate a FANUC R-2000 industrial robot to do it for you!

Here are the top five reasons to automate your material handling and spot welding applications with a FANUC R-2000:

	1. Production Times: The FANUC R-2000 has been proven to increase production times and throughput in many industries. It takes at least four human workers to keep pace with one FANUC R-2000 robot.

	2. Versatility: FANUC produced many designs and models of the R-2000. The standard model is floor-mounted, features a 165 kilogram payload capacity, and reaches 2,650 millimeters. Other models feature higher payload capacities, longer reaches, different mounting styles (wall, shelf, and gantry), and other modifications to fit more industrial needs.

	3. Cost/ROI: The initial cost for a system containing a FANUC R-2000 may seem a little daunting at first. But after looking at the numbers again, you will realize that the one time initial cost will actually save you money in the long run! A typical return on investment for a FANUC R-2000 is six months. Money your company was previously using on payroll for workers performing tasks that the R-2000 is now performing is eliminated. Workers’ time can now be spent performing more challenging, meaningful tasks. If the initial cost is still prohibitive, leasing a robot is also a viable option.

	4. Specifications: Weighing in at 1,210 kilograms and reaching 2,650 millimeters, the FANUC R-2000 still maintains a 0.2 millimeter repeatability. That’s as thick as one-fifth of a dime! Different models of the R-2000 possess other specifications users will find desirable for various applications.

	5. It’s Easy: Working with RobotWorx to integrate a FANUC R-2000 is easy! Simply call our expert sales staff to get started on a system that incorporates this versatile robot. They will work with you and our engineers to develop the perfect robotic system for your company. Call us today at 740-383-8383, or visit the R-2000 product page for a free price quote.

How Used Palletizers Stack Up

Used palletizers can lift, stack, transfer, and pallet build with the best.

RobotWorx’ thorough refurbishing process makes certain used palletizers are returned to like new condition, appearance, and performance. Each used palletizer is completely inspected. Any faulty part is replaced or repaired, and the robot is run through a series of performance tests, including repeatability testing. A complete cleaning and fresh coat of paint leave the robotic palletizer arm and control cabinet looking as good as new. In addition, used palletizers cost much less, 40-60% less than new palletizing robots.

Used Palletizer Variety and Individualized Integration:
At RobotWorx we’re all about providing customers with their choice of affordable and dependable palletizing robots. We carry used Motoman palletizers, used KUKA palletizers, and used FANUC palletizers and specialize in designing and integrating complete, custom palletizing systems that maximize efficiency. We provide EOAT solutions to fit specific products and the right palletizing software to facilitate complex pallet building.

Steps to Buying a Used Palletizer:
Not sure how to go about selecting a used palletizer and building the right robotic palletizing system for your facility? That's where RobotWorx' integration team can assist. First, we'll help to narrow down your options by determining your payload and reach requirements. How much will this robot need to lift and extend? Perhaps you’ll need a super strong arm such as the FANUC M-90iA/600 (payload capacity 600kg and 2832mm horizontal reach). For other palletizing jobs, a nimble, more compact, Motoman EPL80 robot will offer a better fit.

The second step is EOAT. Tooling is a critical element of palletizing. Different types of EOAT are needed depending on the product being handled. RobotWorx works with each company to determine what type of gripper, be it suction, encompassing, magnetic, etc., is best suited for the parts/containers being palletized.

Third, RobotWorx finalizes the integration details and builds the final used palletizer system. Used palletizers are quite versatile. The systems can be built so they access multiple conveyors and multiple pallets stations. Track systems extend used palletizer work envelopes, allowing them to move over distance.

Tig Welding Made Simple

Tig welding is an application known for being a little finicky. It takes some skill to perform manually. Often times, the products being tig welded require precise control (aerospace parts, for example. For this and other reasons, many companies choose to automate their tig welding process. Industrial robots are capable of providing user-friendly, top-quality, consistent tig welding performance.

Tig Welding Programming and Quality Simplified:
Industrial robots are easy to program and use. Parameters can be adjusted and perfected allowing the robot to provide excellent tig welds every single time. With robotic tig welding solutions, your company stands to improve product quality and production while reducing wasted materials and wasted time.

	Tig Welding Reliability:
Robotic tig welding has the ability to actually minimize cycle time. In addition to being a rather tricky welding process, tig welding is typically slower. Robots do not actually speed up the welding, but they do condense cycle times by minimizing time between welds and streamlining any other similar down times. In addition, industrial robots do not take the breaks and vacations. They are capable of working 24/7 if necessary.

	Tig Welding Savings:
Not only are skilled workers becoming a limited commodity, they can also prove rather expensive. This is especially true when it comes to skilled tig welders. Robots, on the other hand, are a one-time purchase. They provide excellent return on investment (ROI), too.

	Tig Welding Safety:
Any welding process is accompanied with certain health risks and dangers: heat, fumes, arc glare, etc. Robotic tig welding cells eliminate these risks and protect workers. Every tig welding workcell is outfitted with various safety features to make sure the welding environment is secure.

RobotWorx sells tig welding robots and complete custom tig welding workcells. For more information about robotic solutions for tig welding, contact RobotWorx at 740-383-8383.

Robots for Pick and Place Automation

Pick and place. Pick and place. Pick and place. Sound a bit dull to you? It's no secret why pick and place automation is so popular. Robots are best suited to handle these repetitive, often precise handling jobs. Consider the advantages of a cost-effective robot solution.

Untiring workers, robots can work at the same pace without taking breaks or vacations. This naturally leads to more predictable cycle times and improved throughput - generating savings for the company.

Pick and place jobs are psychologically and physically taxing. They require workers to repeat the same movements again and again, stressing finger and wrist joints in ways that often lead to serious health problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Pick and place automation eliminates such risks. Robots such as the FANUC M-1ia or Motoman SDA5D are designed to withstand repetitive movement.

Highly flexible, industrial robots offer a pick and place automation solutions for products large and small. Choose from a variety of payload and reach combinations as well as robot and EOAT designs to fit specific product or environmental requirements.

Call RobotWorx for pricing and information on pick and place automation solutions: 740-383-8383.

RobotWorx Turns Used Robots into Worktable Positioners

As a robot reconditioning company, RobotWorx is in the habit of giving robots a second chance. Our thorough reconditioning methods reduce waste and offer customers more affordable automation options. One of the newest ways we have reused older robot arms is by turning them into turntable positioners.

Turntable positioners are valuable components of any workcell. Their job is to move parts within the work envelope of the robot in an efficient manner. RobotWorx takes the lower base components of older robot arms, reconditions them, then flips them to act as positioners for worktables. Some of the robot models we've had success with are the Motoman SK120 and FANUC S430i.

	***Video: Robots Retrofitted as Positioners***

These retrofitted turntable positioners cost only half as much as their brand new counterparts. This is just one way RobotWorx is able to provide reliable, low-cost robotic solutions to its customers. Already, nearly one dozen robots have been retrofitted in this manner. The remaining robotic arm parts are inventoried and sold as well.

Call RobotWorx at 740-383-8383 with any inquiries about this robot reuse process.

Video Explains Industrial Robot Reconditioning Process

At RobotWorx we buy and resells top quality used robots. To ensure that each and every used robot functions like new, our technical staff follows a rigorous 168-point inspection process. This tried and true method involves inspection, replacement, testing, cleaning, and repainting.

RobotWorx media team recently put together a video that shows all the robotic components that are inspected:

	***Robot Reconditioning Video: 168-Point Inspection***

In addition, we've broken down the major reconditioning steps here:

Robot Manipulator Inspection

RobotWorx' 168-point inspection begins with the robotic arm.

The robot's wrist is tested and inspected for irregularities. Grease is replaced and pullies, belts, and harmonic drives are closely examined for any flaw. Next, A/C motors and encoders are tested, as well as the cabling that connects them.

The next step is to test the performance of all axes and replace bearing grease. If the robot undergoing reconditioning is a larger model, the counter balance is inspected at this point. Batteries are checked and faulty ones switched out.

The RobotWorx' reconditioning process also includes a thorough cleaning and repainting of the robotic arm.

Robot Controller Inspection

The controller receives a thorough inspection, testing, and tune-up too.

Cooling fans and filters are visually inspected, tested, and cleaned. Then the servo amp area components and connections are tested and parts replaced if need be. Next, internal controller cabling, connections, and wire harness are all inspected for flaws, wearing, and functionality. All electrical boards and cards are test run for any performance flaws and replaced if necessary.

The exterior of the controller cabinet is cleaned with dry ice while the interior is cleaned to perfection with solvents. Finally, the cabinet is given a fresh coat of paint.

	Robotic Teach Pendant Inspection

Another important part of the RobotWorx reconditioning process is testing and checking the teach pendant.

The robotic teach pendant's keys, buttons, and display screen are inspected and tested. E-stop, Hold, Deadman switches, etc. are tested for functionality and wear. All cables are inspected and replaced if necessary and the teach pendant's casing is opened so all inner components can be inspected thoroughly.

How to Extend the Life of Robotic Cables

Robot cables represent an important part of any robot. Acting as the robot's main arteries, cables provide power and information connections between all the major parts of the robot: pendant, controller, and robotic arm.

If not properly cared for, robot cables can be damaged and wear out prematurely. Purchasing and changing out cables is costly. Not only are robot cables expensive to replace, the process to replace them involves taking your robot out of production.

By following a few basic steps, you can effectively extend the lifespan of your robot's cables, maintain a safer workplace, and minimize downtime.

***VIDEO: How To Take Care of Robot Cables***

A few key points from the cable preventive maintenance video...

	Stick to a Routine:
Make it a habit to inspect robot cables on a daily basic. It only takes a few moments to check for wear and tear. Look at places where the cable turns such as where it is routed through each robot axis.

	Neat and Natural:
When it comes to installing, routing, and maintaining robot cabling, keep things neat and natural. Avoid pinching or bending the cables whenever possible. Instead, position them in line with the robotic manipulator, off the floor, and away from tooling. If there are extra cables, place them out of the way and neatly arranged.

To find out more about robot cables and preventive maintenance, call RobotWorx 740-383-8383.

Industrial Robots' Role in Lean Manufacturing

Manufacturing companies do not stay in business by being unproductive and inefficient. Companies in manufacturing industries want to maintain as many efficient processes as they can. Industrial robots integrated into lean manufacturing processes provide a way for companies to increase efficiency and quality while decreasing waste.

	The Lean Manufacturing Process

Implementing lean manufacturing methods involves changing a facility's layout and procedures to reduce unnecessary steps, movements, and other waste. Waste, in lean manufacturing terms, occurs when tasks that are not "value-added tasks" take place. A value-added task physically adds to or manipulates a product in a way that increases its value in the eyes of consumers. For example, walking to and from a toolbox to get the right tools is not a value-added task. The time away from the part is considered waste. Eliminating as much waste as possible and focusing on value-added tasks is the heart of lean manufacturing methodologies.

	Industrial Robots and Lean Manufacturing

Many manufacturers question the benefit of industrial robots in manufacturing settings in terms of adding to lean manufacturing processes. Wouldn't industrial robots add to overproduction of products? What happens after a company installs industrial robots and manufacturing processes change?

While it is true that industrial robot running at full capacity could cause overproduction, a company using lean manufacturing techniques would not run their industrial robots at full capacity unless consumer demand called for it. Running manufacturing robots and production lines at speeds equal to consumer demand allows manufacturers to be more flexible with the products they produce and avoid costs associated with counting, transporting, and storing overproduced products. Because they provide numerous benefits in both quality and safety to manufacturers, implementing industrial robots into lean manufacturing processes leads to reductions in waste and unnecessary costs and can be achieved easily.

If a company needs to change a manufacturing process, they wouldn't want industrial robots getting in the way of completing customers' orders. Instead of having one industrial robot performing many tasks, several smaller industrial robots performing a single task would allow for greater flexibility. According to a Bosch podcast, one lean manufacturing expert explains that a true lean manufacturer would rather use eight one-slice toasters than one eight-slice toaster. Single slice toasters (or machines in the real world) allow for more variability and less waste (www.robotics.org).

	Industrial Robot Benefits

Using industrial robots in manufacturing allows companies to increase product quality while reducing risk of injury. Industrial robots perform manufacturing applications with pinpoint accuracy and create products with unmatched quality. Workers can perform work in safer environments as industrial robots handle work in the dangerous ones. Tight spaces, harmful chemicals, and other hazardous environments pose no threat to robots.

Choose Motoman EA Series for Robotic Arc Welding

It's time to entrust your welding needs to the experts. Motoman's "Expert Arc" robots are application-specific, designed to achieve excellent cycle times, fit neatly in tight cell configurations, and perform top-quality welds every single time.

Internally Routed Cabling:

One of the most important design features offered by Motoman Robotics Expert Arc robots is thru-arm cabling. All hoses and cabling for the welding peripherals is routed inside the upper arm. This allows the robot to move more freely and with better posture, providing excellent access to parts and thus, higher quality welds.

In addition, internally routed cabling lasts longer because it isn't subject to twisting and pinching from the robot's movements. Such thru-arm cabling design also leads to faster programming because the cables no longer have to be accounted for.

	Application Flexibility:

The series consists of three distinct models, the EA1400N, EA1800N, and EA1900N. The EA1400N and EA1900N robots provide a low, 3kg payload, ideally suited for a typical arc welding gun. The EA1800N has a bigger payload, 15kg, offerings additional application versatility. With the right tooling, all three EA series robots could easily take care of material handling and assembly applications.

	Generous Work Envelopes:

Motoman Robotics built the Expert Arc robots with ample work envelopes. This is particularly helpful when it comes to accessing hard-to-reach parts and maintaining proper welding torch position. The three EA robots offer horizontal reach measurements of 1388mm, 1807mm, and 1904mm.

All Under Control:
Expert Arc robots come with the advanced NX100 controller and user-friendly teach pendant for straightforward programming.

At RobotWorx, we take used robot refurbishment very seriously. We're dedicated to providing top quality refurbished robots to our customers, and the thoroughness of our refurbishment process proves it.

The top three advantages of RobotWorx' refurbished Motoman robots are affordability, reliability, and support. Each refurbished Motoman robot is returned to like-new condition and functionality. They provide flexibility, speed, and repeatability - everything you'll need to meet exacting quality and production requirements.

	Affordability

Refurbished robots offer incredible savings and unbeatable ROI. RobotWorx' Motoman robots cost 50% less than brand new models. Sometimes the initial cost of a brand new robot can be a deterrent. With refurbished robots, your company can automate without a financial toll. Because of their reduced cost, refurbished Motoman robots allow companies to invest in turnkey workcells instead of being limited to only buying robot manipulators.

	Reliability

Each of RobotWorx' refurbished Motoman robots is put through a systematic 168-point inspection and refurbishment process. We inspect and test the robot manipulator, controller, and teach pendant to make sure they meet original functionality standards.

The robot manipulator is run through repeatability testing to make sure it performs within the proper accuracy parameters. Lubricant, batteries, and any other faulty components are replaced. Our staff cleans every manipulator with a dry ice machine. After that, the robot arm undergoes full detailing. Finally, the arm is given a fresh coat of paint.

In the same way, the refurbishment process requires that the controller cabinet and teach pendant be completely tested, repaired, and meticulously cleaned. The controller cabinet is repainted and RobotWorx' staff replaces every faulty battery, fan, connector, and/or fuse so functionality remains top-notch.

	Support

RobotWorx' refurbished Motoman robots are supported with a complete RobotWorx warranty. In addition, we provide every customer with robot training, absolutely free! Have a troubleshooting question? RobotWorx' staff is available to provide phone support - again, free of charge - throughout the life of the robot.

We Refurbish Yaskawa Motoman Robots

One of RobotWorx' areas of expertise is refurbishing used industrial robots, including robots manufactured by Yaskawa Motoman.

	Where The Robots Come From:
Our acquisitions team seeks out the highest quality and most marketable robots for refurbishment. Some of the Yaskawa Motoman robots we refurbish have been used in production, others are virtually brand new demo models. Some of the robots we refurbish are still manufactured by Yaskawa Motoman. Others are older or discontinued models. Discontinued Yaskawa Motoman robots include: DA20, EA1900N, ES165N, ES200N, HP165, HP20, HP20XP, HP350, HP5, HP50, HP50-20, HP50-35, IA20XP, PX1850, PX2050, SSA2000, SSF2000.

	The Refurbish and Rebuilt Process:
RobotWorx reconditioning starts with a thorough cleaning (first with dry ice). Then the robotic arm and controller are complete inspected. Next, all faulty components are replaced and the system is run through a battery of tests.

Once a used robot has passed through the RobotWorx' refurbish and rebuild process, it emerges good-as-new and ready to return to production. A refurbished robot is less costly and just as reliable as a newer model. Every single refurbished robot is accompanied with a full warranty from RobotWorx.

ABB IRC5 and PLC Combined

Simplify, save space, and lower costs with a new option available from ABB. Instead of two separate cabinets (PLC and IRC5) ABB's new integrated option combines the two, placing the PLC unit neatly inside the IRC5 cabinet door.

ABB's integrated PLC option offers convenience and unbeatable performance. It is designed for robotic cell control. Even so, the scope of its control is up to the user. The AC500 PLC unit is powerful enough to act as a master for the whole system. On the other hand, the integrated PLC unit can simply be used to control single components - peripherals, feeders, etc.

The IRC5 is ABB's most advanced, fifth generation controller. For more information about the integrated PLC option call RobotWorx at 740-383-8383.

Transform Packaging with Small Industrial Robots

When you think of robotic packaging, hefty palletizing robots most likely come to mind.

But these larger models aren't the only robots being used in the packaging industry today. Small assembly robots have found a niche as well.

Many packaging processes take place before items are palletized or otherwise readied for shipment. They run the gamut from pick and place to loading, labeling, and inspecting. In the past, these jobs have been handled manually or with fixed automation machines. However, small robots have proven to provide a more versatile, low-cost solution for many of these tasks.

Compact Design: The typical small industrial robot is designed with six axes of movement just like the larger models. However, small industrial robots have payloads of less than 20kg and work envelopes with less than a 1300mm horizontal reach. Their flexibility and compact footprint make them ideal for packaging jobs.

Versatility: Robots are extremely versatile. The same robotic arm can be programmed to handle a wide variety of different jobs - wrapping, pick and place, loading - you name it! Add a vision and/or sensor system and the robot can provide even more sophisticated processing (for example: repositioning items or sorting them). With fixed automation, changing a process can prove difficult - often requiring a costly tool change or a new machine. But small robots are often able to accommodate a process change with programming or a low-cost EOAT solution.

Affordability: Small industrial robots are low-cost, especially when compared to expensive fixed automation. This means the return on investment is even more substantial. EOAT (end of arm tooling) is less expensive to switch out, plus quick tool changers make it possible to use different tools without stopping a process.

If you're considering using small assembly robots to increase the versatility and productivity of your packaging processes, we'd love to talk to you! Call RobotWorx at 740-383-8383.

Some of RobotWorx' small robot offerings:
Motoman: HP Series, SV Series, K3, CR3
	Fanuc: LR Mate
	ABB: IRB 140

Get Your Feet Wet with Used Robots

Buying your first robot? There are many reasons for first time robot buyers to choose a used robot.

	Affordability:
There's no doubt about it - used robots cost less than brand new robots. The difference in pricing can be dramatic - as much as 50%! Because of their low cost, used robots are more accessible to first-time buyers. They provide an opportunity to test out automation without as much of a financial commitment.

	ROI:
All industrial robots, both new and old, offer unbeatable return on investment (ROI). Efficient and accurate robots quickly pay for themselves and vastly improve productivity.

	Application:
Many first-time robot buyers are looking for a way to handle the monotonous tasks - machine tending, material handling, palletizing. These simple, repetitive jobs are ideally suited for used robots. Cutting edge robotic equipment is not always necessary when it comes to repetitious jobs such as these. The repeatability and speed of used robots is well within range for the majority of application needs.

	How Integrators Help:
When purchasing your first robot, it makes sense to work closely with an integrator. A system integrator makes sure all safety issues are dealt with correctly and all integration with your product and application works smoothly. Many first time robot buyers save themselves considerable headaches with this step.

Fanuc M710iB/70T Works from the Top

Up and out of the way. This Fanuc gantry expands your work envelope, saves space, adds speed, and increases productivity - by working from above. Consider purchasing a low-cost Fanuc M710iB/70T to revolutionize your workspace.

An excellent solution for dispensing, machine tending, material handling, and a number of finishing applications, this reconditioned gantry robot and its zippy eight meter rail is currently on sale.

Advantages to Buying the M710iB Gantry Robot System:

		Use Space
The work envelope afforded by a Fanuc M710iB/70T gantry robot is much larger than that of a floor-mounted robot. This solution provides better accessibility to machines, while using space efficiently. Gantries are ideal for machine tending jobs because they are not in the way when machines need to be maintained, repaired, or manually operated.

		Save Time
The Fanuc M710iB gantry system is quick and agile. This articulated 6-axis robot is prepared to increase productivity with speedy cycle times and multitasking. Plus, the Fanuc M710iB is easy to set up - allowing your company to start using it right away and save money.

		Add Flexibility
The Fanuc M710iB's significant 70kg payload, together with the capabilities of the RJ3iB controller, and the eight meter long rail, make the robot extremely useful. It is ideal for all manner of jobs - post processing, handling, loading and unloading, etc. In addition, the robot arm itself can be underslung or sideslung to provide even greater accessibility.

		Embrace the Perks
This reduced price package deal includes a one year warranty from the integrator and free training.

Packaging with Used Robots

Packaging has a tendency to change in size, texture, shape, and arrangement. That's where robots' flexibility can help. Robots are uniquely designed to handle packaging applications with dexterity, speed, and versatility.

Whatever kind of packaging or shipping materials you're using: Saran wrap, bags, boxes, trays, pallets, RobotWorx has an affordable, used robot solution. Each of our reconditioned robots is fully tested, reworked, and accompanied by a warranty.

One of the chief advantages of using robots for packaging is their ability to perform more than one function. When it comes to related packaging tasks - cutting, case coding, inspecting, sorting, robots are up to the challenge.

	Low Payload Packaging Needs:
Need a used robot for nimble packaging? Consider a small 6-axis articulated robot (eg. Motoman's SV or HP series), or something less traditional such as the delta-style ABB IRB Flexpicker.

	Heavy Payload Packaging Needs:
Looking for a used robot for packaging that requires a little more brawn? RobotWorx' inventory is full of palletizers to meet any packaging challenge - lifting heavy objects into crates, totes, boxes, or simply palletizing.

Contact RobotWorx for a used robot packaging answer - 740-383-8383.

6 Ways to Save with Used Robotic Arms

Used robotic arms offer a good way to keep costs down while remaining competitive.

		Low Initial Cost
When compared with the prices of newer models, used robotic arms are quite affordable. RobotWorx' used robotic arms are sold for 50-60% less than brand new ones.

		Unbeatable ROI
Since they are available for such an affordable price, used robotic arms offer an incredible return on investment (ROI). Robots are capable of paying for themselves in no time!

		The Best Availability
In the same way, used robotic arms are often more readily available than new robot models. If you need a robot quickly, your best bet is a used robotic arm. The same rule applies to robotic parts. A used robotic part is much easier to find (and a great deal cheaper). With used robotic equipment you don't face the same types of waiting periods you often encounter with brand new robots.

		Even More Variety
Going with used robotic equipment gives you more options. As one of the premier sources of used robotic arms, RobotWorx offers a variety of different robot brands and models. Don't limit yourself to new models. Instead, made sure you choose the robot that best fits your application, preexisting automation, environment, etc.

		Improved Performance
When it comes to application execution, used robotic arms are capable of terrific results. Every used robotic arm from RobotWorx is completely overhauled, repainted, and tested for repeatability. Used robotic arms allow companies to save because they improve application performance, shorten cycle times and increase throughput.

		Less Risk
Because of their low cost, used robotic arms are a low risk option for those exploring automation for the first time.

RobotWorx carries an array of used robotic arms. Contact the Sales Department for pricing and other information: 740-383-8383.

LAHS was awarded a competitive Perkins Tech-Prep Grant to develop career-tech programs for Business and Marketing, Computer Networking, and Product Engineering. In November 2008, the school used a portion of the grant money to purchase a used reconditioned robot from RobotWorx.

Don Davis, the pre-engineering teacher at LAHS, found the robotics company online. RobotWorx specializes in providing its customers with reconditioned robots that are both affordable and reliable. "I would definitely recommend RobotWorx to other schools. They were helpful in selecting the model that was best for our needs and price range, and helped us obtain a model with an end effector that was appropriate for our needs. We will probably be purchasing a programming package from them in our next round of grant funding.

LAHS was able to buy the Fanuc robot arm, controller, teach pendant, and a small hydraulic gripper for less. "RobotWorx' website was excellent, and when I inquired about used robots, they got right back to me and were extremely helpful with suggestions and quotes," Davis said.

The Fanuc robot has proved an affordable way to inspire and teach students, "We chose a used model because it was comparable in price to so-called "teaching robots" that were much smaller. By going this route, we actually have an industry standard RJ3iB controller and an authentic industry type robotic arm... not just a simulation and a small classroom model."

This particular robot model was selected with the classroom in mind, "The Fanuc LR MATE 200iB is a nice, compact machine that doesn't take up a lot of floor space. The arm is large enough to do some real work, but small enough to be student friendly. It is also very precise."

The Fanuc LR Mate 200iB RJ3iB is a vertically-articulated 6-axis robot with a 5kg payload capacity. Its 700mm horizontal reach, accuracy, and compact footprint allow it to handle a variety of applications from assembly and arc welding to pick and place material handling. Plus, the highly versatile Fanuc LR Mate 200iB can be mounted to the floor, ceiling, or even a wall.

Davis is very satisfied with RobotWorx' product and customer service, "The machine we purchased was "like new" as they had told us it would be, and it performs beautifully. The students love to watch it move through its cycle."

This isn't the first time Don Davis has introduced formal robotics education to the classroom. He also started a robotics program at an engineering magnet middle school in Florida. "The students absolutely loved it and did some excellent engineering and programming work."

Now Davis is infusing Los Alamos' pre-engineering students with the same enthusiasm. Thus far, his robotics design classes, which he describes as "true STEM-type courses integrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Math" have been a hit. Approximately 110 students are enrolled in five robotics sections this year and Davis has high hopes for the future.

"The word is getting out about how interesting these courses are," he said. "Because the courses are hands-on, project based, problem solving learning experiences, the students are highly motivated and learn quite a lot. They get to actually use the science and technology, engineering and math that may otherwise fade from memory, strengthening their knowledge base and competency in those areas."

The LAHS robotics courses offer dual credit that counts towards college as well as high school. The classes incorporate a variety of robotics components - Lego NXT, Tetrix kits, and now the Fanuc industrial robot. The progression is a natural one: "Lego and Tetrix sets provide a great foundation and appreciation for the students' work with the Fanuc LR Mate 200iB," Davis said.

At this point, the students will be programming the Fanuc LR MATE 200iB for a pick and place application. More complex applications will follow. In fact, Davis thinks the used RobotWorx model will change the way students approach their futures. "I hope that students will gain an appreciation for this technology and a desire to pursue robotics engineering and related fields such as manufacturing and product engineering as a career path."

Used Robot or New - Making the Decision

Consider these advantages when deciding whether or not to automate with used:

		Affordability:
Used robot models are normally much cheaper than new robots and are just as dependable. It's hard to beat a 50-60% discount.

		Dependability:
Used robots are extremely reliable. Instead of coming direct from the factory, reconditioned used robots have been tested over time. New robots, however, have yet to be tested in the field. All RobotWorx reconditioned robots have passed through an intense reconditioning process. Each one comes with a full warranty.

		Availability:
With reconditioned robot arms there is more variety and greater availability of parts. This in turn allows the owner of a used robot to locate and repair used robot with more ease and speed. This availability also drives costs down. With newer robot models, parts are more costly and only available from one source.

Lean, mean, interactive robots are on their way! A new robot safety standard, the ISO 10218, provides a glimpse of the robotic systems of the future.

The ISO 10218 robot safety standard is currently being written by a team of ISO safety experts in consultation with robot manufacturers. Much of the content emphasizes a rather positive subject - lean manufacturing technology.

According to a recent article from the Robotic Industries Association, the ISO 10218 discusses cutting edge technologies - soft robot axes, compact workcells, and human-robot interaction. Robot workcells of the future will be even more efficient than they are today. Robot footprints are addressed - workcells may shrink in size from 30-40%! Robot-human work environments are another safety standard focus.

Quality - When you integrate a robot for polishing expect consistent, even results. Polish objects to a shimmering finish with robots.

Lego Mindstorm Team Tours RobotWorx

For a group of 5th graders from the Buckeye Valley School District, playing with Legos is more than just fun and games.

This Lego Mindstorm team explores engineering and robotics concepts by building small, motored machines with specialized Lego kits. A few weeks ago, a trip to RobotWorx helped put everything in context. The group of parents and students toured the RobotWorx facility, learning about industrial robots, workcells, reconditioning, etc. The tour provided an opportunity for the boys to form connections between their Lego machines and the large-scale industrial robotic systems.

The local group is preparing to enter a FIRST Lego League (FLL) competition. As educators realize the value of hands-on robotics education at an early age, robotics programs and competitions (FLL, 4H RoboKids, and National Robotics Challenge) are becoming increasingly popular. RobotWorx is proud to support robotics education on both local and national levels with tours, donations, and sponsorships.
Choose Used: Deciding Between Motoman and Fanuc

Keep the big picture in mind when choosing between two similar used robots. Standard robot models from robot manufacturers Motoman and Fanuc may seem like clones at first glance, but there are important reasons to choose a used Motoman robot over a used Fanuc robot, or a used Fanuc over a used Motoman.

		Consider Your Staff:
Don't forget about your staff when choosing a used robot. If your technicians and operators are more familiar with one robot manufacturer over another, it often makes more sense to choose the manufacturer they know. The decision to buy used robots from a manufacturer your staff already feel comfortable with will save you hours of training and troubleshooting. Now you can start production right away, and maintain the equipment with more ease.

		Find a Good Match:
Do you already have Motoman or Fanuc robots installed in your facility? Keep everything visually and mechanically unified by staying with the same brand of robotics equipment. If you're extending a production line, the decision is virtually made for you - choose the used robot manufacturer that's already installed. Depending on the robot, you won't even have to add a new controller.

		Pick the Right Specs:
Pay attention to individual robot specifications. Used Motoman and Fanuc robots may seem similar, but specs do vary. Finding a close match for your application may override other considerations. Make sure the payload, reach, axis configuration, and speed of your used Motoman and Fanuc robot fit your needs.

		Weigh Availability and Cost:
Still in a quandary? It pays to look into availability. When dealing with used robots, some models are more obtainable than others. Check to see that your used Fanuc or used Motoman robot is in the inventory. Availability is directly tied to cost. By choosing a more common model you can lower your initial investment.

		Controller Generation:
Used Fanuc and Motoman robots are typically very similar in price. However, different generations of controllers may drive your cost up. Fanuc robots in particular may have pricier software.

Panasonic Pana Dice Positioner: A Vital Component

The Pana Dice Positioner is a fundamental component of any Panasonic configuration. This modular cube-shaped positioner is simply designed and available with three distinct weight capacities: 200kg, 500kg, and 1,000kg.

The Pana Dice positioner is AC motor-driven for quick, precise rotations and tilting. Its simple design may be a bit misleading - the Pana Dice's efficient and synchronized movements are anything but ordinary. It works to position the robot in the right places at the right times. The results are impressive - shorter cycle times and more accurate welding.

It's easy to install a robot to this positioner. Plus, it has a hollow center space for air and electrical cabling to pass through.

Need a robot positioner? Interested in the ingenious cube-like Pana Dice?
RobotWorx has affordable positioners for any robot configuration and price range. Call us at 740-383-8383 for more information.

Toploader vs. Gantry Robot: Fanuc M-6iT & M-6i

What's the difference between a gantry-mounted robot and a toploader robot? A comparison between the Fanuc M-6i and Fanuc M-6iT (toploader) models makes the distinction clear.

It's easy to think of the Fanuc M-6i and Fanuc M-6iT as virtually the same model. Both robots have 6kg payloads. Their upper and lower arms have the same measurements. Axes 3-6 on both robots possess the same range of movement and speeds. A closer look reveals some major differences.

	Axis 1: Linear vs. Rotary

Toploader: In the case of the Fanuc M-6iT, axis 1 attaches directly to the gantry system. The measurement of this linear axis varies with the length of the rail. There are 3m, 5m, and 6.5m rail lengths. The speed of this axis is 2m per second. The direct rail mounting results in a more compact robot body.

Gantry Robot: The standard Fanuc M-6i robot, on the other hand, never directly attaches to the gantry system. Instead, the robot's base mounts upside down to another attachment and then to the rail. This adds extra weight and length to the robot itself. The Fanuc M-6i's rotary axis 1, located at the base of the robot, provides a full 360 degrees of motion.

	Axis 2: Motion Range
Another difference between the Fanuc M-6iT and the Fanuc M-6i is the axis 2 motion range. The second axis of the gantry-hung M-6i can move 210 degrees, while the M-6iT has a full 242 degree range of motion from that point. The toploader offers more flexibility. See the Fanuc M-6iT in motion. Compare to the movements of a gantry-hung Fanuc ArcMate 120i .

Gantry or Toploader - Which is Best?
This decision is largely determined by the application. The Fanuc M-6iT is the slimmer and more compact of the two. It is less cumbersome and more nimble. However, you may need the extra reach a gantry-hung Fanuc M-6i can provide.

Used Robot Dealers - Pick Your Supplier Carefully

Used robot dealers are not created equal. When selecting a used robot dealer, consult these guidelines to single out the best deal and most reliable robot dealer.

	1) Does the dealer offer services other than sales?
Check to see if the used robot dealer offers more than single robot arms and controllers. What if you are interested in a robotic workcell? What if you are thinking about adding to an existing production line? Can they help you answer questions on safety or floorplan layouts? RobotWorx is an integration provider. We don't limit ourselves. Instead, we offer a large inventory of robot arms as well as turnkey workcells.

	2) Do they recondition used robots?
Some used robot dealers buy and sell robots without rebuilding or testing them. While you may be able to power the robot up, there's no way of knowing if its condition is reliable. The reconditioning process at RobotWorx is extensive and complete. After a thorough cleaning, we replace consumables, perform repairs, repaint, and test for functionality and repeatability. You can depend on RobotWorx' reconditioned used robots.

	3) Is robot integration offered as a service?
Robot integration is the process of equipping robots to perform specific jobs. Using an experienced integrator saves you time, effort, and costly mistakes/headaches. However, many used robot dealers can't offer you this service. Sometimes dealers lack the technical know-how. Sometimes they don't want to hassle with integration or spend the time working closely with customers. Is your used robot dealer capable of outfitting your robot with EOAT, safety systems, work tables, fencing...etc.?

RobotWorx isn't intimidated by integration. We have installed robot systems to handle a wide variety of applications for thousands of companies throughout the world. We work alongside customers to produce robot solutions that are tailored to fit their applications, products, and facility.

	4) Do they provide a variety of robot models and manufacturers? Beware of used robot dealers with limited collections. Sometimes small dealers are limited to selecting only a few model types or manufacturers. Keep your options open by going to a dealer with more variety and the buying power to maintain low prices. RobotWorx offers a wide variety of models from the most common manufacturers: Motoman, Fanuc, Panasonic, Nachi, and ABB. However, if you're looking for something from a different manufacturer - Comau, Kuka, Mitsubishi - we'd be happy to help you find it.

	5) Do they offer a variety of newer robot models?
Check into the inventory of used robot dealers. Make sure you aren't buying antiquated models. At RobotWorx, we provide a healthy mix of new and used robots. If you're looking for a specific model or even a brand new model, we'll use our supplier network to find you the best deal.

	6) Do they offer a warranty on the robot? When purchasing any type of used equipment, it makes sense to find deals that include warranties. Sadly, there aren't that many used robot dealers that provide this kind of security. At RobotWorx, we stand by our robots. Every used robot system is protected with a full warranty covering parts and service. We guarantee 100% satisfaction in our robots.

	7) Do they provide training?
Occasionally, used robot dealers offer training on your robot system. More often they don't. However, this perk is invaluable. Not only does it present an opportunity for you to inspect the system and run your own parts through, it gives you a basic understanding of how to power, program, and troubleshoot your robotic system. Plus, you save money by not having to hire an additional robot programmer.

RobotWorx gives you this luxury. We offer free training to every customer at our facility. While one to two days are included in every deal, we allow customers to spend more time familiarizing themselves with their system. RobotWorx will not ship the robot until the customer is completely satisfied.

Need to Replace Your Industrial Robot Battery?

RobotWorx' latest instructional movie tackles the topic of robot batteries. What do these mysterious little units actually control? When should batteries be replaced? Where are they and what if they die unexpectedly? Find answers to these commonly asked questions and more in the Robot Battery Movie.

		The Robot Battery's Purpose:
The robot battery's main purpose is to store memory backup for the robot's home position. If you turn off the robot, it remembers that specific starting location. The origin is vital to the programming and performance of the robot.

		What if the Battery Dies?
You have to re-teach the robot's origin position if the battery dies unexpectedly. Save yourself the hassle by returning the robot to its home position prior to turning it off. That way if the programming data is lost, you still retain the home position information.

		What They Look Like:
There is a wide variety of robot batteries, ranging from a standard D-cell to specially designed Lithium batteries. Again, consult your robot's manual or a sales representative to learn which type to purchase.

		The Robot Battery's Location:
Robot batteries are located in completely different places. Check your robot manual for specifics. Motoman batteries are located in the base of the robot manipulator, other models have batteries in their controllers.

		When Should I Change Batteries?
RobotWorx recommends battery replacement every year, but make sure to check the manual for model-specific guidelines.

	Where to Buy Them:
RobotWorx offers a wide assortment of replacement robot batteries. We'll make sure to set you up with an affordable battery that fits your robot model. Order one by calling our parts staff at 740-383-8383 or submitting an online request form.

Used ABB Robot: The IRB 940 Tricept

The ABB IRB 940 Tricept looks and performs differently than any other industrial robot.

Built like a tripod, the IRB 940 has three legs, a central stabilizer, and a 3-axis wrist. It mounts upside down. Parallel kinematics allows it to move more forcefully than a typical 6-axis manipulator. The ABB IRB 940 has a vertical payload of 1300kg and a horizontal payload of 350kg.

The ABB IRB 940 robot was created with foundry settings in mind. It is an excellent solution for cleaning and preparing castings. The Tricept is often put to work in the automotive industry - handling bumpers, sub-frames and other parts.

ABB's IRB 940's history is as unique as its design. The original Tricept design concept was invented by a Swedish scientist in 1987. It was meant for assembly but soon found a use machining. It was not paired with a suitable controller till 1992.

In 2002, the Tricept robot manipulator owner, SMT joined up with ABB to create the more marketable ABB IRB 940. An ABB S4Cplus controller was integrated with the Tricept to make it more user-friendly. Since the S4Cplus controller is familiar to many ABB users, the Tricept is now much easier to program.

RobotWorx Donates Used Robot to UMN

Free robots! Last year, RobotWorx gave away free industrial robots to eligible institutions of higher learning. The University of Minnesota was one of the lucky recipients of the 2007 RobotWorx Donation Program.

RobotWorx donated a refurbished Motoman SV3X robot to UMN's Computational Perception and Action Lab. Professor Paul Schrater, an instructor of Psychology and Computer Science at the UMN, recently took the time to discuss the impact of the donation robot on their research.

As described on its website, one of the lab's goals is "to explore questions about how humans use visual and haptic (touch) information to perform tasks like reaching and grasping an object." This is where the robot has been able to play a key role. The robot provides the precision, consistency, and the complete absence of "human" hesitancy.

"We use the robot to move cameras so we can do video-based tracking and move/swap objects for human reaching experiments," Schrater said. "It allows us to study how human motor control handles uncertainty about object shape and location. It also provides a way to automate complex experiments involving many objects."

Schrater and his students created their own EOAT to match their specific needs. "We attach grippers and platforms to hold and move the objects," he said. "The platforms have cradles for objects so that the objects can be removed. We are in the process of developing algorithms for real-time object interception experiments that will involve a novel object cradle attachment."

Schrater said the experience has been a good one. "I think it is an excellent way to help keep education affordable."

Cold Jet's Dry Ice Technology Keeps RobotWorx Clean and Green

A little over a year ago, RobotWorx switched from traditional solvent-based cleaning methods to dry ice. We don't regret the decision to go high tech. Dry ice is fast, effective, and environmentally friendly. It has made an impact on our entire robot refurbishing process.

RobotWorx owns the AeRO 30 Dry Ice Blasting Machine, a standard model manufactured by Cold Jet. The machine uses carbon dioxide in its solid form. It shoots these dry ice pellets at high pressure through a gun, much like sand blasting, except dry ice is nonabrasive. The combination of kinetic energy and thermal shock upon impact cause the C02 to change from a solid to a gas. These micro-explosions clear the surface without creating any waste product.

		***Dry Ice Video***

The task of cleaning industrial robots presents many challenges. Used robots typically arrive at RobotWorx' facility covered with grime, welding residues, paint, grease, or other debris. Plus, industrial robots have a variety of surface materials - from the hard surfaces of the manipulators to the more sensitive electrical controllers, cables, and wiring.

Dry ice has made it possible for RobotWorx to clean effectively while keeping the robots protected. "It gets rid of the heavy stuff," RobotWorx Shop Manager Matt Schrift said. "It removes 90% so I only have to focus on 10%. Plus, it's better than steam cleaning or using water because it doesn't leave a moisture blanket on the robot or inside the robot. It allows us to clean electrical equipment."

RobotWorx has found the dry ice cleaning process is much faster than the tedious and time-consuming solvent alternative. "It saves time on the initial cleaning of the robots," Schrift said. "What would have taken me eight hours originally, I can now get done in about two." This in turn speeds up the entire refurbishment process, allowing RobotWorx to prepare more robots for customers.

Dry ice is safer for employees and the environment as a whole. "We've cut back on our cleaning solvent - we use about 25% of what we used to use, which makes us a much more environmentally friendly company," Schrift said.

Dry ice cleaning recycles existing CO2 - from solid back to gas. Instead of adding pollutants to the environment, dry ice minimizes the use of toxic chemicals. It eliminates harmful run-off and prevents workers from being exposed to hazardous solvents. It is approved by the FDA, EPA, and USDA. Still, Schrift requires everyone to follow a few safety steps to avoid direct contact with CO2. Dry ice machine operators wear a face shield and gloves as well as hearing protection.

It covers emerging robot technologies, news, and analysis for virtually every robot market, including medical, pharmaceutical, toy, military, and industrial. Not only does RT run three major conference events and provide consulting services, it also hosts its own website, www.roboticstrends.com.

RT recently interviewed RobotWorx president Keith Wanner and we are thrilled to return the favor with a look at Robotics Trends.

Mr. Dan Kara, the founder and president of RT, has a rare skill set that may well be the key to his success. His technical background is in computer science but he also has expertise in writing. Instead going into engineering, he decided to build and run integrated media firms.

The Robotics Trends media firm is based out of Boston, a common location for these types of companies, according to Kara. Before founding RT in 2003, he sold two computer/information technology media firms. He had been gauging the robotics industry for a while, waiting for the right moment.

A trip to Japan convinced him of the enormous potential of the robotics field. After a year's sabbatical, he and two business partners launched Robotics Trends, the first media firm dedicated to the industry. Kara eventually bought out his partners, running RT for a year before EH Publishing purchased it.

While RT is not the first media firm Kara has started, it is definitely his favorite.
"I like robotics; I like the people," he said. "There is more to this industry than people think."

Kara has stayed on as president of RT. He believes RT has an exciting and important role to play. "We're building products and building an industry," he said. "We believe this is a huge marketplace, largely untapped. We aren't going to make robots, but we are going to report on robots."

RT's job is to spread the word about the market potential available with robotics. "Some people just don't get it," Kara said. "They don't understand that this is a multi million dollar marketplace."

RT's goal is to provide networking opportunities for all types of robotic companies. It hosts three major events: RoboBusiness, RoboDevelopment, and RoboNexus. This provides an opportunity for businesses in unrelated fields to rub shoulders and realize ways in which they can work together. Kara said it is interesting to see military and toy companies, for example, networking and learning from one another.

RoboBusiness is focused on personal, service and mobile robotics. Kara said most of the presenters are from military, medical, and toy companies. "We bring them all in one place, throw a bunch of parties and offer a lot of speakers," he said. "This is a flag ship event - the premier business development conference in the nation."

The RoboDevelopment Conference and Exposition is geared toward the consumer industry. This conference attracts a lot of robotics techs and companies that produce items such as lawn mowers and vacuum cleaners.

RT's publishing branch runs the organization's online portal, www.roboticstrends.com. Kara said he is pleased with the site's recent re-launch. RT also plans to release a newsletter this year.

The third branch of RT is dedicated to market research and consulting services. The firm's advice is valued by big players like Microsoft and Lockheed Martin.

How does RT juggle all these responsibilities? Kara said it can be difficult to keep up with the workload. RT's conferences have a staff of their own and are run very professionally, but the firm is still building its staff. "We're grossly understaffed at this point," Kara said. "We don't have a research analyst, but we have hired a writer and we will be bringing on more people soon."

In the meantime, Kara is busy, but he's also intrigued about where the robotics industry is headed. He ends the conversation by talking about the Kiva Systems - small bots used to move shelving in huge distribution warehouses. He believes the future of robotics is very bright. "You are starting to see some research in this field. A lot of people are looking into it. They're realizing this is an area where they can make money."

Endless Possibilities: The R2000i Fanuc Used Robot Family

Meet the Fanuc R2000i clan - a multitalented and extensive robot family. Its 20 models span two generations. These highly intelligent, versatile robots excel in welding, material handling, transfer, machine tending, and dispensing applications, to name a few. They offer multiple mounting options, a variety of payloads, and work envelopes.

The R2000iA series is the earliest generation of R2000i robots. With 12 models, this series offers high-speed solutions for each specific setting and application. This generation introduced the R2000iA/165F standard model - a floor mounted robot with a 165kg payload and 2650mm horizontal reach.

The more contemporary R2000iB series includes eight models. It released new versions of seven R2000iA models -all with lighter and slightly faster builds. A new model, the R2000iB/175L - long reach floor mount, was added to the family. This generation does not include new versions of the floor mount forward option or ceiling mount forward option models.

Both generations are highly compatible with one another. This makes it easy for factories to upgrade. The R2000iA series uses an RJ3iB controller and the R2000iB series, an RJ3iC.

Four Major Advantages to Choosing Robotic over Fixed Automation

When it comes to automation, the first major decision for any business owner is choosing between fixed or robotic systems. Overwhelmingly, those who stand at this crossroad decide in favor of robots, but why?

		Greater Flexibility:
How much flexibility do you want to incorporate into your facility? Consider the requirements of your project. You either need an automated system that handles a variety of processes and parts or one that is customized for one task or one part.

Fixed automation is just that - fixed. It is best if used for specific jobs. The components are customized to the dimensions and needs of individual parts and projects. Plus, fixed automation systems typically take up more room in the facility than their robotic counterparts.

In contrast, robots offer a high level of flexibility. A single robot can be programmed to accommodate a variety of part sizes, different materials, and even different applications. If the task changes, the robot manipulator handles everything with a simple switch in end-of-arm tooling. Robots offer multi-axis flexibility - allowing for multiple angles, long reach ranges, and close proximity to parts. They can also be mounted from different locations - the ceiling, floor, wall, a table - without changing their performance.

		Lower Cost:
Unlike fixed automation systems, robots are commodity items. Not only are they mass produced, but they are widely available direct from the manufacturer or through a multitude of suppliers. This fact alone drives the price of robots down. In addition, the world of used robot sales is rapidly expanding - offering even more affordable alternatives for entire integrated systems or parts - and the guarantee of resale.

Since fixed automation systems are custom-built, there is a slim chance of finding affordable used versions. It follows that these systems are not always good options for resale either. Their lack of flexibility alone is a deterrent; fixed automation is typically single purpose, which makes it difficult to convert to other tasks.

		Simplified Maintenance:
Robots are designed for easy maintenance and repair. With robots, there is a single manufacturer, which makes it easier to find spare parts. Articulated robots are modular in build, so parts can be quickly exchanged. Maintenance typically occurs on-site without needing to shut down entire production lines.

Fixed automation systems are designed from customized parts from multiple sources. Repair can be time consuming and require specialized parts and service. With fixed automation systems, a minor change can require everything to stop for a time.

		Faster Implementation:
Robots offer the advantage of pre-engineering. Many robots are part of turnkey systems that come pre-built and pre-configured. Plus, robotic workcells and individual manipulators are installed with ease. With user-friendly teach pendants that fit in your hand, and many software systems available in Windows formats, robots are easily programmed.

On the other hand, because fixed automation is heavily customized, implementation can take more time. First of all, these systems take longer to design. Plus, they are often built on-site which can take up space and sometimes interrupt existing systems. Last of all, the parts for fixed automation systems take time to assemble because they are not from the same source.

Trying to evaluate what type of automation is best for your company? RobotWorx can answer your questions. Call 740-383-8383.

How to Avoid Buying a Used Robot Lemon: Five Questions to Ask

If you've ever bought a used car, you know there can be risks and unexpected problems. Many industrial robot buyers are reluctant to purchase used robots because they fear the same things. You can avoid buying a lemon by asking the right questions and choosing a reputable supplier.

Why Is This Robot For Sale?
Cars go on sale for multiple reasons. While a vehicle may be put on the market because the owner just bought a new one, other cars may be for sale because they have serious mechanical problems. The same is true for used robots.

Play it safe by finding out as much as you can about the previous robot owners and the reasons why it is on the market. However, if you want to save yourself time and effort, buying a used robot from RobotWorx may be the safest option.

RobotWorx is committed to buying top-quality used robots. Most of the robots we purchase are the result of factory upgrades, closing, or consolidations. Sometimes the robots are surplus models or have been repossessed.

			How Has It Been Used?
Cars can be worn down with rough driving, harsh weather, or other damaging elements. Used robots are often the victims of similar abuses. When you're buying a used robot, it can be helpful to find out information about its previous life. What kind of environment, application, and materials has the robot been working with?

RobotWorx offers a reliable alternative to this type of guessing game. We only purchase high-quality used robots. Plus, every robot is reconditioned prior to selling. Reconditioning is a process that returns used robots to factory condition.

			What about Maintenance Records?
As with used cars, it is important to find out the repairs have been made to your robot. This will give you a better idea about your robot's lifespan.

At RobotWorx we make this step easy. Each refurbished robot has passed through our exclusive 168-point reconditioning process. We replace any faulty part, clean, grease, and re-paint every used robot. Then we thoroughly test each robot.

			Is There a Warranty?
When buying a used car, warranties aren't the norm. You are lucky to receive one when you purchase from a dealer. The same holds true for used robots. This is another reason to avoid purchasing a robot from a private seller or an auction.

A warranty adds an additional level of security should anything go wrong with your robot. At RobotWorx, we're dedicated to supporting our customers and our robots. We back up our promise by providing a warranty with 100% parts and labor covered on every robot. A warranty is included with every purchase because we know we are offering a quality product.

			How Does It Run?
It can be risky to buy a car you've never driven. The same rule applies to robots. Make sure you're purchasing a fully-functioning robot with a test run. This is another instance where buying from an integrator, not at an auction, pays off.

At RobotWorx, we encourage customers to visit our shop and test their robot using their own parts. We do not ship the robots until they meet and exceed the customer's expectations.

The R-2000iA series offers a powerful answer to high payload needs. With eight different versions, this robot group fits every context and application - from material handling and machine tending to arc and spot welding.

The standard R-2000iA/165F is a 6-axis robot with a 165kg payload capacity. It can reach 2650mm horizontally from its floor mount position. This wide work envelope and hefty payload give it the advantage on any production floor.

The Fanuc R family includes three additional floor mount editions. The R-2000iA/210F is a heavy duty, high payload model with a 2650mm horizontal reach. The R-2000iA/200FO forward option sits further away from the base so its 2650mm work envelope is oriented to the front. A long arm floor mount version, the R-2000iA/125L provides a 3001mm reach while maintaining a lower payload.

Used Robots Give Small Columbus Business a Competitive Edge

Blue Chip Manufacturing and Sales got more than they bargained for when they installed two refurbished welding robots from RobotWorx in their Columbus shop. The used robots have gone beyond impacting productivity and savings to transforming Blue Chip's entire business approach.

Refurbished used robots made sense for this small business for a number of reasons. The Motoman K6 and OTC/Miller MR-V6 from RobotWorx gave Blue Chip even more flexibility. Now they have the luxury to be picky about the projects they accept. They can be more specific when they make offers.

"It's tremendous because it allows me to be more competitive," Blue Chip Vice President Steve Tatman said. "It also allows me to be more creative in my quoting."

Blue Chip is outfitted for multiple applications, from machining and fabricating to welding and painting. The company typically works with metals - handling U.S. Military Surplus projects as well as parts for both commercial and privately-owned companies. Tatman's wife, Tammy owns the company, which employs 47. Fittingly, a quarter of the Blue Chip workforce have served in the military.

Since Blue Chip has a smaller workforce, the robots also offer a simple way to increase production. "Having one robot saves me three people," Tatman said. He is pleased with his fast, efficient, and tireless robots. "It just makes it so much easier and it saves me so much money." Tatman said.

For Blue Chip, the financial benefits of buying used robots were instantaneous. Tatman's first refurbished robot was four years old and cost just $20,000 (compared to $90,000 new). Tatman's second robot purchase less than a year later cost only $60,000 (compared to $150,000 new). Each robot paid for itself after a few months.

The refurbished robots have also improved Blue Chip's work environment. Employees are protected from the fumes, heat, and flash that accompany manual welding applications. Tatman is considering another robot - this time to handle a heavy-lifting task that is potential hazardous for his workers.

Despite all the advantages, when it comes down to it, Tatman admits the true reason he buys from RobotWorx is trust. Tatman and RobotWorx owner Keith Wanner started their businesses a year apart from each other - RobotWorx in 1992 and Blue Chip in 1993. "I've watched him grow and he has watched me grow," Tatman said. He appreciates the introduction to robotics he has received from Wanner. "When it comes to the down and dirty of the mechanics, there's no one better than Keith," Tatman said. "I don't think there is anyone more knowledgeable [about robots]."

Blue Chip Manufacturing and Sales was highlighted along with RobotWorx in the recent Fortune Small Business Magazine article about used robotics. Visit Blue Chip Manufacturing and Sales at http://www.bluechipmanufacturing.net or view a video of the OTC robot system.

Used Motoman Robots - The SK Series

The introduction of the MRC controller in 1994 allowed Motoman to introduce the revolutionary SK line of six-axis industrial robots. With the new ability to control up to 21 axes and synchronize two robots, the SK line became popular in arc welding workcells. The potential workload was increased by 300%.

A new line of AC servo motors, the Sigma series, gave Motoman robots maximum power for increased productivity. Sigma motors offered 33% less weight and size without compromising power, allowing the SK robots to offer the slimmest profile available. Other advantages included higher axis speeds and an increased work envelope. Late model SK robots used the XRC control system for new programming features.

For more information about a used Motoman robot from the SK series, please see our complete listing of Motoman SK robots.
